keep your feet fit for mobility

Are you feet fit? Fit feet are essential to maintaining health and mobility, according to local podiatrist Sam Johnston.
Yet research has consistently shown that people ignore their feet, even when they hurt, and they take better care of their cars, even though they will probably travel further on their feet in a lifetime, on average 128,000 kilometres, than in any one car.
“The state of our health is reflected in our feet and vice versa. If our feet are not fit, it’s unlikely we will be either,” Mr Johnston said.
“When people think about getting in shape or improving their health, they rarely thing about the condition of their feet or deal with any foot problems they may have. The first signs of many diseases, including diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and coronary heart disease, show up in their feet.”
“And foot problems have a big impact on general health, leading to an increased rate of workplace foot injuries, falls in older people and an increased risk of sporting injuries.”
Daily wear and tear take a toll on feet. Many people would be surprised to learn that feet can wear out, in a fashion, Mr Johnston said. By the age of 50, a person’s feet have lost up to half their shock-absorbing ability, due to the fatty pads in the soles of the feet thinning out.
“Don’t ignore your feet because they might be trying to tell you something,” Mr Johnston warned.
“Wounds on the feet that won’t heal may be a sign of diabetes, resulting in ulceration and ultimately, amputation if not addressed. Sport and regular physical activity are necessary to protect foot health,” Mr Johnston said.
A visit to the podiatrist is recommended if:-
- You notice uneven shoe wear,
- You notices rashes, hard skin lumps or bumps on your feet,
- You suffer foot or lower limb discomfort during exercise or playing sport,
- Your feet suffer in-grown toenails, athlete’s foot or verrucas,
- You suffer recurrent pain in feet or legs,
- You are unexpectedly tripping or falling, and
- You have any concerns about your feet.
